History
MEDNAX was established in 2009 as the parent company of Pediatrix Medical Group, Inc. and American Anesthesiology, Inc. During Pediatrix Medical Group's more than 30-year history, the company evolved from a single neonatology group to a national group practice specializing in neonatology, maternal-fetal medicine, pediatric cardiology, pediatric intensive care, pediatric and OBGYN hospitalist services and newborn hearing screens. In September 2007 the company expanded its model beyond maternal-fetal-newborn and pediatric specialties with the introduction of an anesthesiology physician services, American Anesthesiology. Following its third anesthesia practice acquisition, the name MEDNAX was introduced as the holding company of Pediatrix Medical Group, Inc. and American Anesthesiology, Inc.
MEDNAX encompasses broad physician services, rather than any specific specialties or subspecialties and allows for future growth. The name MEDNAX is an abstract word that reflects our unique position as an organization. The syllable MED, a physician-driven medical group that's focused on patient care; NAX, a national presence, with the "X" as a continuation of the Pediatrix brand, from which MEDNAX was launched, that has represented quality patient care since 1979.
