Baby Benjamin caught the flu virus from someone who wasn’t vaccinated at an age when he couldn’t be protected, and spent three weeks fighting for his life in the ICU as a result. “So now more people, especially the younger generation who are not immunized, are at risk for these infections,” said Dr. Venu Devabhaktuni, MEDNAX-affiliated pediatric intensivist at Salah Foundation Children’s Hospital. Health specialists say those who can get the flu vaccine should not hesitate because it creates something called ‘community immunity’ – when the majority of the population is vaccinated against an illness, everyone’s risk of getting sick goes down, including those who are most vulnerable. “We are sometimes dealing with those under six months, and they are so little and get the most severe form of the flu and can die from it.”
