While COVID-19 doesn’t seem to affect children’s health in the same way it does adults, they are susceptible to other dangers brought on by the societal stress of a pandemic, such as abuse and neglect. The added stressors parents are experiencing, including job loss, homeschooling and limited childcare resources, can lead to harmful behavior towards children that can easily go unnoticed due to being socially distant from other adults like teachers and extended family members. Dr. Thomas Truman, pediatric intensivist and medical director at Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare in Tallahassee, Fla., discusses the factors that put children at risk for abuse and neglect, and what parents can do to ensure a safe and secure environment in the home and beyond.
