Karen Crane, medical assistant at Pediatrix affiliate Pediatric Ear, Nose & Throat Institute of South Texas in San Antonio, gave the gift of life this holiday season and donated her kidney to her nurse counterpart, Crystal Villarreal, LPN. Crystal suffers from polycystic kidney disease and was in the end stage of renal failure. “Swapping out kidneys from one body to another,” Crane joked. The two have been colleagues and best friends for several years. “There’s just no way to describe it. There isn’t,” Villarreal said of Crane’s decision to be a living kidney donor. “And to be given a gift like that, it’s priceless. It really is.”
