As playground season gets into full swing, the Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued a report highlighting injuries, fatalities and playground equipment safety issues occurring between 2009 and 2014, with falls and fractures being the top incidents. Nearly 1.5 million of these injuries were treated in U.S. emergency rooms. Dr. Ian Mitchell, MEDNAX-affiliated pediatric surgeon and director of the trauma program at The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio in San Antonio, Texas, says “the most common is falling off monkey bars.” In addition to arm and leg fractures, “we do see a significant number of small lacerations that need to be sewn up,” said Dr. Mitchell. He cautions caretakers to inspect playground equipment for hazards and ensure that surfaces aren’t too hot.
