The Mothers’ Milk Bank of Tennessee is working to bring the first breast milk bank location to Nashville. The group currently oversees donation depots but they want to acquire the necessary equipment so the pasteurization process can be completed in Nashville, and the donated milk can help local moms with high risk newborns. “The focus is mainly on babies that are very tiny, and less than 3.5 pounds,” said Dr. Susan Campbell, MEDNAX-affiliated neonatologist and co-founder of Mothers’ Milk Bank of Tennessee. “Imagine what we could do in Tennessee if we had our own milk bank, and send the milk to Vanderbilt, Centennial and Saint Thomas Midtown.” The goal is to have it up and running in about a year.
