MEDNAX-affiliated maternal-fetal medicine specialist, Dr. Bettina Paek at EvergreenHealth in Kirkland, Wash., recently traveled to Jamaica to perform the country’s first-ever ultrasound-guided intrauterine transfusion at Victoria Jubilee Hospital. The expecting Jamaican mother had been diagnosed with Rh-Isoimmunization early in her pregnancy and at 29 weeks, found out that the baby was anemic. The local medical team did not have the experience to perform the necessary transfusion so Dr. Paek, who has performed the procedure at least 100 times, was called in to donate her time and expertise. Her hope is that the Jamaican medical team will set up a simulation to practice the transfusion and be able to perform it on their own in the future.
