Dr. Jenelle Ferry, Pediatrix-affiliated neonatologist at St. Joseph’s Women’s Hospital in Tampa, Fla., authored a piece on helping parents navigate the added stress of having a baby in the NICU during a pandemic, from virus exposure concerns to managing the challenges of limited visitation protocols. “As hard as this time is, especially for NICU mamas, as a neonatologist I want you to know that your NICU care providers are right there by your side, and we want to provide you and your baby with the best care possible,” said Dr. Ferry. She advises parents to prepare for the NICU environment, understand their baby’s nutritional needs and options, ask for help and delegate when needed, keep records and be an advocate for the baby and closely follow public health guidelines. “Take comfort in the fact that you are not alone, and that your baby has an entire care team doing everything in their power to keep you and your baby safe.”
