Colby Choi was diagnosed with single-sided deafness following a failed school hearing test. Treatment options were previously very limited, but a cochlear implant system was recently approved by the FDA for single-sided deafness and Choi was a good candidate. Dr. Eric Jaryszak, Pediatrix-affiliated pediatric otolaryngologist at Children’s Ear, Nose, Throat and Allergy in Orlando, Fla., first performed surgery on Choi. “It’s an invasive surgery and we do a fair amount of work in the bone behind the ear,” said Jaryszak. Shortly following surgery, the implant was successfully activated and Choi’s hearing was fully restored. He is the first child in the country to receive the implant for single-sided deafness.
