Those with underlying conditions, such as pregnancy, may experience more severe outcomes should they contract the disease. Dr. Alan Fishman, Obstetrix-affiliated perinatologist, explains why this is. “Pregnancy is a situation with all kinds of hormonal changes in the mix,” Fishman said, noting that “pregnancy is a stress on a healthy woman’s body.” When it comes to what expecting moms can do to minimize their risk, he recommends practicing safe habits and staying on schedule with regular checkups.
