MEDNAX-affiliated neonatologist, Dr. Sue Hall at St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard, Calif., recently published a paper titled “The neonatal intensive parenting unit: an introduction,” which promotes parents as partners in the care of their baby. The paper describes a paradigm shift occurring in neonatal intensive care, where care teams are moving towards a focus that requires effective partnerships with families. The term Newborn Intensive Parenting Unit (NIPU) originated to capture this concept.
