With the rise in twin and multiple pregnancies comes more mothers whose pregnancies are considered high-risk. MEDNAX-affiliated pediatric surgeon, Dr. Corey Iqbal, at Overland Park Regional Medical Center in Kansas City, Mo., discusses the lifesaving amino reduction procedure he performed on patient Sarah Hammontree, who was pregnant with identical twins who were diagnosed with twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS). The twins were sharing the same placenta with one receiving more nutrients than the other. Fortunately, Sarah’s TTTS was in stage one, which made this option possible and alleviated the need for in-utero surgery.
