Treating infectious disease in young patients

Infectious diseases among children under 18 can be mild with few symptoms or severe and sometimes fatal. They are caused by bacterial, viral, fungal or parasitic organisms that infect the body and are generally highly transmissible.

In the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate between 100 and 500 children younger than 5 die from respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) each year. During the 2019/20 flu season, 199 flu-related deaths were reported to the CDC; however, the agency estimates more than 430 children succumbed to the flu that season. Additionally, as of early 2022, COVID-19 had reportedly taken the lives of 355 children ages zero to 4, and 737 deaths occurred among the 5- to 18-year-old age group.

Our board-certified, fellowship-trained pediatric infectious disease specialists diagnose, treat and work to prevent various types of infectious diseases in newborns through young adults. While vaccination and regular hygiene, such as hand washing and wearing face masks, is the best way to prevent many contagious infectious diseases, hundreds of thousands of children aren't well protected.

Bringing expertise and compassion to young patients, our pediatric specialists diagnose and treat various infectious diseases, such as:

  • Bacteria: Strep throat, tuberculosis, pneumonia, staph.
  • Viruses: Common cold, flu, Ebola, COVID-19.
  • Fungi: Ringworm, athlete's foot.
  • Parasites: Pinworms, giardiasis, cryptosporidium.
  • Immune deficiencies: Severe combined immune deficiency (SCID), common variable immune deficiency (CVID), HIV/AIDS, drug-induced immune deficiency.

Program benefits

Compassion, dedication and knowledge are fundamental when caring for children with infectious diseases. Our specialists diagnose these illnesses by testing blood, urine, feces, mucus and other body fluids and examining them under a microscope to identify the type of infectious organism. They can then determine the best treatment options specific to a patient's unique diagnosis.
