American Anesthesiology Associates of Virginia (AAVA), formerly known as Fredericksburg Anesthesia Associates, has provided anesthesia services to Fredericksburg and the surrounding communities at Mary Washington Hospital since 1965. Our 17-member group of board certified anesthesiologists also provide services at Stafford Hospital and Fredericksburg Ambulatory Surgery Center. We provide anesthesia to more than 20,000 surgical and 3,000 obstetric patients each year, and serve our institutions in a variety of roles, such as medical staff president, chief of services, medical directors, and board and committee members.
For over more than 50 years, we have established a reputation of success and grown into a full-service anesthesia group providing nearly all of the services that one would see in a large university hospital. Other than transplant surgery and high-risk pediatric surgery, we provide anesthesia for a comprehensive scope of procedures including cardiovascular, thoracic, neurologic, orthopedics, OB/ GYN, pediatric, urologic, plastic surgery, general surgery, trauma, endoscopy, and minimally-invasive robotic surgery. In addition to the traditional operating room setting, we perform an ever-increasing number of cases in other locations such as the endoscopy suite, the electrophysiology lab, lithotripsy and the radiology department.
Our physicians are directly involved in every aspect of your anesthesia care – before, during and after your procedure. Because we work in a care team model whereby our anesthesiologists medically direct CRNAs, you benefit from having not only one, but two anesthesia providers involved. We trust in the care team model as the safest means of providing anesthesia and have seen this “extra pair of hands” prove invaluable. It ensures a smooth and prompt patient flow within the perioperative environment as well as during critical moments of patient care.
To keep up with the changing pace of health care and medical advancements, our practice continuously evaluates how we can incorporate new services and improve existing ones based on best practice standards set forth by industry experts. With the advent of portable ultrasound technology, we have also been able to provide an increasing number of peripheral nerve blocks and indwelling catheters to improve our patients’ perioperative experience.
We do our utmost to provide you an anesthetic experience that combines the highest standard of anesthesia care available along with our personalized, compassionate touch. Through our motto of care and vigilance, we make every effort to provide you with an experience that is as safe and enjoyable as possible. As your advocate in anesthesia care, we consider your safety our primary goal. We review quality measures regularly to ensure we are meeting the needs of our patients and community. Your feedback is important to ensure we meet our goal. Please participate in our survey program and let us continue to raise the bar in exceptional anesthesia care.
