Dr. Thompson’s research includes investigating devices to close holes in the heart without surgery. He is acting principal investigator for the stroke patent foramen ovale (PFO) trial and migraine PFO trial. Dr. Thompson has performed more than 1,200 device closures of atrial septal defects, PFO and ventricular septal defects and teaches other physicians how to perform device closures of congenital heart defects. Dr. Thompson has presented and published his research findings at national and international meetings.

Dr. Thompson's clinical interests include interventional cardiology and the critical care of infants and children with heart disease.

Dr. Thompson enjoys spending his free time taking his twin boys to their soccer games and swim meets and fishing with them on the Potomac River.
