Dr. Nikolaos Zacharias is a native of Greece. He earned his medical diploma with excellence from the National & Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece, reciting the Hippocratic Oath as a top graduate in his class. Throughout his training, Dr. Zacharias received numerous Hellenic scholarships for undergraduate and postgraduate education.
After moving to Houston in 1998, he completed his Obstetrics & Gynecology residency at Baylor College of Medicine, where he was elected chief resident by his faculty and peers in 2001. He received the Council for Residency Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology (CREOG) Academic Achievement Award four consecutive years for scoring at the top 3% of his U.S. peers.
Dr. Zacharias' passion for prenatal sonography and profound interest in pregnancy complications led him to a Maternal-Fetal Medicine fellowship at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston, Texas, where he received the UTMB Hospital Academic Fellowship Award. Upon completing his fellowship, he was recruited back to Baylor College of Medicine in 2005, where he served as an Assistant Professor of OB/GYN and MFM until 2013. While at Baylor, Dr. Zacharias served as the Medical Director of the Harris Health System Prenatal Ultrasound Screening Program, the founding Medical Director of the Ben Taub Maternal-Fetal Medicine Prenatal Ultrasound Unit and one of the founding members of the Texas Children's Fetal Center.
He has shown an incredible commitment to education in his field and serves teaching faculty at Ben Taub General and Texas Children's Hospital. Dr. Zacharias received BCM's student-faculty teaching award in 2011 and was elected to America's Top Obstetricians & Gynecologists (2012).
After eight successful years at Baylor College of Medicine, Dr. Zacharias was recruited as an Assistant Professor in the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at The University of Texas Health Science Center (UTHealth). During his time at UTHealth, Dr. Zacharias served as the Medical Director of the Prenatal Diagnosis and Testing Center at Lyndon Baines Johnson General Hospital.
He continued his dedication to education at UTHealth, receiving the UTHealth annual Dean's teaching award three years in a row for his excellence in medical student, OB/GYN resident and MFM fellow education.
Dr. Zacharias authored several chapters and published in peer-reviewed journals in perinatology, reporting the first case of lethal congenital Zika virus syndrome in the United States (2016). He has a keen interest in placenta accreta spectrum and is a co-author of the paper with the largest dataset on this topic in the literature (2014). He is the author of the "Perinatal Mortality" chapter on UpToDate, the trusted online physician resource.
Dr. Zacharias joined Mednax as an MFM specialist with Obstetrix Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialists in May 2019 and is proud to offer his expertise to Houston's prenatal population. He is fluent in English, Greek, French and Spanish. Dr. Zacharias is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and Maternal-Fetal Medicine and is a fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and a member of the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine. When he is not caring for his patients, Dr. Zacharias enjoys spending time with his family.
